About HumanSignal

HumanSignal started in 2019 as Heartex and took its current name in June 2023. It makes Label Studio, an open source tool to label data and check AI output. HumanSignal says over 1 million people use it. In November 2025 it bought Erud AI, a data collection company, and started HumanSignal Services. This team creates and labels data for AI companies, so HumanSignal now hires contractors. Current posts include photo collection in 21 countries, short videos for AI projects, rating graphic designs, and paid improv sessions in US studios.

How hiring works

  1. Apply to a post on HumanSignal's Greenhouse board, or create a contributor account at onboard.humansignal.com. Choose a contributor account, not an organization account.
  2. Add your skills, languages, location, and availability. Then complete identity verification, a tax form, and a payment method under Identity & Payments at app.humansignal.com.
  3. Pass the project checks, such as a skill screen, a calibration task, or a credential review. Some screeners are paid and some are not. Passing does not guarantee a place on a project.
  4. Projects you qualify for appear in the Work Available tab in Label Studio, with the rate. Some projects need a short course first. Support and updates come through a contributor Discord server.

What workers say

Good

  • Posts show the rate before you apply, for example $20 an hour for photo collection in the US and an average of $80 an hour for approved short videos.
  • Payouts run weekly to PayPal or a bank account, with a $35 minimum. The help center explains each payment step.
  • Photo and video projects use your own phone or camera, and you choose when to work.

Watch out for

  • Trustpilot has only 2 reviews, both 1 star. One Project Emerald worker reports vague rules, rejections that seemed random, platform glitches, and a month of work with no pay.
  • Pay depends a lot on your country. The same design rating work pays up to $20 an hour in the US, but $3.13 per 120 tasks ($6.25 an hour equivalent) in the Philippines.
  • Passing a screener does not guarantee work. Some screeners and training are unpaid, and bank transfers can take up to two weeks.
