Is AI training legit? Scams and red flags

How to tell a real job from a scam
Scammers copy real AI training jobs. Check any offer against this table:
| Real company | Scam | |
|---|---|---|
| How you find the job | On the company's own site or job board | A message from a stranger by text, WhatsApp, or Telegram |
| Money | Pays you after the work, through a payout service | Asks you to pay, deposit crypto, or send back part of a check |
| ID and bank details | Inside its own platform, after you apply and pass a step | In a chat, by text, or before any test or interview |
| Hiring | A test, an AI interview, or both | Quick money for simple tasks, with few details about the job |
How real AI training jobs work
Real AI training companies hire people to rate AI answers, write example answers, check AI code, or record voice and video data. They come in a few kinds:
- Public companies. Appen is listed in Australia, and Innodata is listed on Nasdaq.
- Startups backed by investors, such as micro1 and Mercor.
- Parts of bigger companies, such as DataAnnotation, which belongs to Surge AI.
How you get hired
- Apply on the company's own site. Many companies post their jobs on hiring sites such as Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, or Ashby.
- Pass a test, an AI interview, or both.
- Verify your ID inside the company's own platform, before your first project or payment. micro1 does it in Deel, Mindrift and Handshake AI use Persona, and DataAnnotation asks for a government ID and a selfie.
For the full hiring path, read how to become an AI trainer.
How you get paid
A real company pays you after the work, through a payout service and on a schedule:
| Company | Method | Schedule |
|---|---|---|
| micro1 | Deel | Twice a month |
| Mercor | Stripe or Wise | Weekly |
| DataAnnotation | PayPal | 7 days after the work |
| Mindrift | Payoneer, or PayPal through Tipalti | Twice a month, on the 5th and 20th |
| Appen | Bank, PayPal, or Payoneer | Monthly, by the 14th |
The payout service can charge a fee. Appen charges no fee, for example, but a PayPal payout outside the US costs one.
That fee comes out of money you earned. It is never money you send first.

Common AI training job scams
Scammers advertise like honest employers. The FTC says they want your money and your personal information. It also says reported losses to job scams more than tripled in three years.
Paying to start
Any request to pay for a job, for training, or to unlock tasks is a scam. The FTC's advice is to never pay anyone to get a job or to get paid.
CloudFactory, OneForma, RWS TrainAI, and Welo Data say they never charge fees to join.
Fake recruiters on WhatsApp, Telegram, and text
The FTC warns about texts from fake recruiters who say they work for a company you might know. They offer work at home with a title like "online assessor". They give the pay but few details about the job, and ask you to reply "YES" or "INTERESTED".
The FTC says to ignore generic or unexpected job messages on text, WhatsApp, or Telegram. Real employers do not contact you that way.
Task scams and crypto deposits
A task scam works like this:
- An unexpected message offers quick money for simple online tasks, such as "optimization" or "product boosting".
- An app shows your earnings growing. The scammer may pay you a small amount to win your trust.
- Then you must deposit your own money, usually in crypto, to unlock more tasks or to withdraw.
The earnings in the app are fake. The FTC also says not to trust anyone who pays you to rate or like things.
Fake checks
A fake employer sends you a check to deposit and asks you to send some of the money back. The FTC calls this a fake check scam.
Early requests for bank or ID details
The companies on this site do ask for your ID and payout details, but inside their own platform, after you apply and pass a step.
- Innodata says it never asks for payment, bank details, or other sensitive data during the application.
- Handshake AI never asks for your Social Security number or bank details by message.
If someone asks for these in a chat, by text, or before any test or interview, stop.
Fake company sites and email addresses
A scammer can use a real company's name, logo, and job titles, with a website or email address that only looks like the company's. Several companies publish the addresses they email from:
| Company | Real email addresses |
|---|---|
| OneForma | Only oneforma.com or centific.com |
| Welo Data | Only welocalize.com, welodata.ai, or hire.lever.co |
| DATAmundi | Only datamundi.ai |
| Handshake AI | Only joinhandshake.com |
| HumanSignal | Any humansignal.com address |
How to check a company and a recruiter
- Find the job yourself. Search for the company, open its own site, and look for the same job on its job board. Do not trust the link in the message.
- Compare the sender's email address, letter by letter, with the addresses the company lists.
- Ask the company through its own site, not through the person who contacted you. Innodata, for example, checks job offers sent to verifyjoboffer@innodata.com.
- Check the hiring steps. The companies on this site have you apply, then pass a test or an interview, then verify your ID inside their own platform. Each company page lists its steps.
- Read worker reviews on the company page. They show which companies pay late or close accounts.
- Never pay, never deposit a check for someone, and never move money to crypto for a job.
Is each company legit?
Every company below is real, but workers report very different experiences. For any other company, open its page from the list of companies that hire AI trainers.
These answers come from our company pages. The complaints come from worker reviews on Trustpilot, Glassdoor, Indeed, and Reddit, and from news reports. Each company page lists its sources and the date we checked them.
Is Mercor legit?
Yes. Mercor is a San Francisco company founded in 2023. It raised $350M at a $10B valuation in 2025, and AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic use it. It pays every week through Stripe or Wise, and it has 4.5 of 5 on Trustpilot from over 1,000 reviews. In March 2026 Mercor reported a cyberattack, and some contractors filed lawsuits about it.
What workers report
- Projects can end or pause with no notice.
- Work volume is hard to predict, and hour caps or rates can drop.
- It is hard to reach a person for support.
Is micro1 legit?
Yes. micro1 is a San Francisco company founded in 2022. In 2026 it raised over $100M at a $4B valuation, and it works with AI labs and companies such as Microsoft and Amazon. It pays contractors through Deel, twice a month, and it has 4.7 of 5 on Trustpilot from over 10,000 reviews.
What workers report
- A passed interview does not guarantee a project. Some people wait for weeks.
- Work volume changes. Projects can end suddenly or move from hourly to per-task pay.
- Many Trustpilot reviews rate the interview, not paid project work.
Is DataAnnotation legit?
Yes. DataAnnotation belongs to Surge AI, a San Francisco company founded in 2020 by Edwin Chen. Surge made $1.2B in revenue in 2024 without outside funding, and it works with AI companies such as Meta and OpenAI. DataAnnotation pays through PayPal, it never asks you for money, and it has 3.9 of 5 on Trustpilot from about 2,000 reviews. In May 2025, a worker filed a class action in California that says Surge should treat its workers as employees, not contractors.
What workers report
- Many applicants never hear back after the Starter Assessment, or wait for months.
- Accounts can lose all projects overnight with no reason given. Workers on Reddit say they still got the pay they had earned.
- Support rarely replies, and work can dry up for weeks. Most recent Trustpilot reviews are 1 star.
Is Meridial legit?
Meridial is a real company. It belongs to Invisible Technologies, a San Francisco company founded in 2015 that raised $100M at a valuation over $2B in 2025. Invisible's customers include Microsoft and AWS. Meridial says it pays every two weeks. But it has 1.5 of 5 on Trustpilot from 32 reviews, and many reviewers say they did unpaid tests and then got no work.
What workers report
- 91% of Trustpilot reviews are 1 star. Many say they did unpaid tests and then got no work.
- Some applicants were stuck at address verification, and support replies can take weeks.
- During some tasks, Meridial can record your screen and use your camera to check that you are present.
Is Handshake AI legit?
Yes. Handshake AI is part of Handshake, a career network founded in 2014 and based in San Francisco. Handshake raised a $200 million Series F at a $3.5 billion valuation in 2022. It says it pays about $60 million a month to more than 30,000 people for AI work, weekly through Stripe. But its Trustpilot page has 1.8 of 5 from 29 reviews. That page covers all of Handshake, and many recent reviews from AI workers report cut hours, unpaid tests, and closed accounts. Handshake only emails from joinhandshake.com addresses and never asks for your SSN or bank details by message.
What workers report
- 86% of Trustpilot reviews give 1 star. The page covers all of Handshake, but many 2026 reviews are from Handshake AI workers. Several say a hidden "active time" timer cut their paid hours after payday.
- Reviewers report unpaid assessments and 2 or more hours of unpaid training. Handshake's help center confirms that onboarding is paid only when the Project Terms say so.
- Work is not guaranteed. Handshake says projects can end within days, and reviewers report removed accounts with little explanation.
Is Prolific legit?
Yes. Prolific is a London company founded in 2014. It went through Y Combinator and raised $32M in 2023, and Google and the University of Oxford use it. It pays through PayPal with no fee, every study pays at least £6 or $8 an hour, and it has 4.5 of 5 on Trustpilot from over 15,000 reviews. Some reviewers say Prolific put their account on hold with little explanation.
What workers report
- Some reviewers say Prolific put their account on hold or banned it with little explanation.
- Support can be slow, and the number of studies changes from day to day.
- Researchers can reject work, and rejected work is not paid. Some studies take longer than the time they show.

Frequently asked questions
Is AI training legit?
Yes, at real companies. They pay you after the work and never ask you to pay. This site lists 1,698 open jobs from 24 companies right now, and each one opens on the company's own job board. Scammers copy this work, so treat any job offer that asks for money as a scam.
Are AI training job offers on WhatsApp or Telegram real?
Treat them as scams. The FTC says to ignore unexpected job messages on text, WhatsApp, or Telegram, because real employers do not contact you that way. Find the job on the company's own site instead.
What is a task scam?
A stranger offers quick money for simple online tasks, and an app shows fake earnings. The scammer may pay you a small amount first. Then you must deposit your own money, usually in crypto, to unlock tasks or withdraw. The FTC says to never pay anyone to get paid.
How do I know if an AI training recruiter is real?
Find the same job on the company's own site, and compare the sender's email address with the ones the company lists. For example, OneForma emails only from oneforma.com or centific.com addresses. A real recruiter never asks you to pay, and asks for your ID or bank details only inside the company's own platform.
What should I do if I was scammed by a fake AI training job?
Stop replying and do not send more money. In the US, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. If you shared your ID, Social Security number, or bank details, go to IdentityTheft.gov.
What is an AI trainer job?
AI trainers help companies improve AI models. You review and rate model answers, write example answers, find mistakes, or record voice and video data. Experts in law, medicine, coding, languages, and other fields teach models how a professional thinks. Most of this work is remote, flexible, and paid by the hour.
Are AI trainer jobs remote?
Yes. Every job on this site is remote, and most have flexible hours. Some jobs accept people from certain countries only, so check the 🌍 location on each job before you apply.
What skills or degrees do I need?
It depends on the job. Generalist jobs need clear writing and attention to detail. Expert jobs usually ask for a degree or work experience in the field, such as a law license or medical training. Language jobs need native or fluent skill in that language. Coding jobs need real programming experience.
