About Handshake AI
Handshake AI is the AI training program of Handshake, a career network for students and job seekers. Garrett Lord, Ben Christensen, and Scott Ringwelski started Handshake in 2014 as computer science students from Michigan Tech. Handshake says it serves 25 million job seekers, 1,600+ schools, and 1 million employers. It started Handshake AI in June 2025 as MOVE, the Model Validation Expert fellowship, for master's students, PhDs, and postdocs. Fellows write prompts, review AI answers, and label data for frontier AI labs that Handshake does not name. The program is now open to students, graduates, and professionals. Fellows must live in the US, except invited fellows abroad, and the referral program lists the US, India, and Canada. Handshake says it pays about $60 million a month to more than 30,000 people. On our board, Handshake AI posts remote red teamer roles on Ashby. You try to make AI models give harmful answers, then score and document the results.

How hiring works
- Apply to a red teamer role on Handshake's Ashby job board, or sign up for the fellowship with a Handshake account. The red teamer forms ask for a resume, US work authorization, and short written answers. The Cybersecurity and CBRNE forms also ask if you live near Seattle or can move there within a month.
- For the fellowship, verify your phone, confirm your US work authorization, upload a PDF resume, and accept the Contractor Agreement. Then wait. Handshake emails you when a project matches your background, and some projects ask for work samples first.
- Verify your identity with Persona, using a photo ID and a selfie. Some projects also need a background check or an assessment, such as a quiz or a practice task. In most cases, you cannot retake a failed assessment.
- Set up your tax details and a Stripe payout method, then finish the project onboarding and training before you start tasks.
What workers say
Good
- Pay is posted up front: $32 to $95 an hour for the general red teamer, $65 to $125 for cybersecurity, and $65 to $158 for CBRNE. Fellowship rates are $30 to $125 an hour and show before you accept a project.
- Pay is weekly through Stripe. Handshake is a 2014 company with a $3.5 billion valuation, and it says it pays about $60 million a month to more than 30,000 people.
- Fellowship hours are flexible, often 5 to 20 hours a week, with projects from 2 weeks to over 3 months. No AI experience is required.
Watch out for
- 86% of Trustpilot reviews give 1 star. The page covers all of Handshake, but many 2026 reviews are from Handshake AI workers. Several say a hidden "active time" timer cut their paid hours after payday.
- Reviewers report unpaid assessments and 2 or more hours of unpaid training. Handshake's help center confirms that onboarding is paid only when the Project Terms say so.
- Work is not guaranteed. Handshake says projects can end within days, and reviewers report removed accounts with little explanation.

How does Handshake AI pay workers?
Fellowship pay goes through Stripe. Each weekly payout covers Monday to Sunday of the week before, in Pacific time. Handshake sends it to the pay platform by Wednesday afternoon, and it can take about 48 hours to show for withdrawal. Some projects use a different schedule, set in the Project Terms. Before your first payment, you file a W-9 or W-8BEN through TaxBandits, and US fellows need an SSN or ITIN. Projects pay by the hour or by the task. Hourly tasks have a time cap, and time above the cap is not paid. Onboarding is paid only when the Project Terms say so. Optional meetings, Slack time, and time lost to technical problems are not paid. Fellowship rates are $30 to $125 an hour. The AI Red Teamer (Remote) role is different: it is a W-2 hourly job through TCWGlobal at $32 to $95 an hour. The Cybersecurity and CBRNE red teamer posts are contract roles and do not say how pay is sent.

Set up your tax details and a Stripe payout method, then finish the project onboarding and training before you start tasks.
Is Handshake AI legit?
Yes. Handshake AI is part of Handshake, a career network founded in 2014 and based in San Francisco. Handshake raised a $200 million Series F at a $3.5 billion valuation in 2022. It says it pays about $60 million a month to more than 30,000 people for AI work, weekly through Stripe. But its Trustpilot page has 1.8 of 5 from 29 reviews. That page covers all of Handshake, and many recent reviews from AI workers report cut hours, unpaid tests, and closed accounts. Handshake only emails from joinhandshake.com addresses and never asks for your SSN or bank details by message.
What is the Handshake AI Red Teamer (Remote) job?
It is a W-2 hourly job through TCWGlobal, 40 hours a week, remote in the US, at $32 to $95 an hour. You write adversarial prompts and multi-turn scenarios to make large language models break their safety rules. Then you score the answers against harm rubrics and document what you tried. Topics include content safety, CBRN, cybersecurity, child safety, and self-harm, across text, image, voice, and agent tools. The post warns of regular exposure to harmful content, including violence and sexually explicit material. Handshake cannot hire people who live in California for this role.
What is an AI trainer job?
AI trainers help companies improve AI models. You review and rate model answers, write example answers, find mistakes, or record voice and video data. Experts in law, medicine, coding, languages, and other fields teach models how a professional thinks. Most of this work is remote, flexible, and paid by the hour.
Are AI trainer jobs remote?
Yes. Every job on this site is remote, and most have flexible hours. Some jobs accept people from certain countries only, so check the π location on each job before you apply.
What skills or degrees do I need?
It depends on the job. Generalist jobs need clear writing and attention to detail. Expert jobs usually ask for a degree or work experience in the field, such as a law license or medical training. Language jobs need native or fluent skill in that language. Coding jobs need real programming experience.
